Project scheduling is distinguished from job shop and other related types of scheduling by the non repetitive nature of the work. A project is usually thought of as a one-time effort, although this may not always be the case .

These techniques decompose the project into a number of activities , represent the precedence relationships among activities through a network, and then determine a critical or bottleneck path through the network.
محبوبترین روش ها روش مسير بحراني (cpm) و فن ارزیابی و بازنگري برنامه (پرت) است. اين تكنيك ها پروژه را به يك سري فعاليت ها تجزيه ميكنند. روابط پيشنيازي را مابين فعاليت ها از طريق يك شبكه نشان مي دهد و سپس يك مسير بحراني یا گلوگاهی را درمیان شبكه معين مي كند.

CPM was develop for E.I. dupont de nemours in1957 and was first applied to construction and maintenance of chemical plants. Since then the use of CPM has been grown at a rapid rate.

CPM در سال 1957 براي E. 1 dupont de nemours توسعه یافت و ابتدا براي ساخت و نگهداري کارخانه های شيميايي بكار رفت. سپس کاربرد سی پی ام با سرعت سریعتری (شروع به ) رشد کرد.
